SILVIS Lab facilities and equipment

Our research is computationally intensive.  To conduct this work, each lab member has a fast Dell Workstation and access to an array of Windows- and Linux-based computer servers. All computers and servers are configured for data-intensive GIS and remote sensing work, and linked via Gigabit switches between each other as well as to the campus backbone. Additionally, the lab possesses internet mapping and data dissemination servers and all systems are getting backed up routinely using both disk and tape backups.

 

 

 

 

SILVIS-application servers

  • Two Windows servers: Type DellPowerEdge R810s, two 8-core Xeon X6550 2.0 GHz processors, 128GB RAM, 3.6 TB SCSI storage
  • Two Windows servers: Type DellPowerEdge R900s, four E7440 Xeon 2.4 GHz quadcore processors, 128 GB RAM, 1.2 TB internal storage, 15 TB directly attached storage
  • One Windows server: Type Dell PowerEdge 2950, dual E5430 Xeon 2.4 GHz quadcore processors, 32 GB RAM, 1.2 TB internal storage, 15 TB SATA storage
  • One Linux server: Type Dell powerEdge R510, two 6-core Xeon X5650 2.66 GHz processors, 64 GB RAM, 8 TB SATA storage
  • All servers are secured by three APC 3000 and one SMART-UPS RT 6KVA RM providing overall 4 hours of power backup

 

Servers for Internet mapping and data dissemination

  • One ArcSDE database server: Type Dell PowerEdge 2650, 3.06 GHz Xeon, 4 GB RAM, 582 GB Ultra SCSI hard disk
  • Two ArcGIS/ArcIMS spatial servers: Type  Dell PowerEdge 1750, 3.06 GHz Xeon, 2 GB RAM, 73 GB Ultra SCSI hard disk
  • All servers are secured by one APC 3000 providing 2 hours of power backup

 

Servers for data backups

  • File server 1: Type Dell PowerEdge R515, two 6-core AMD Opteron processors 2.6 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 24 TB storage
  • File server 2: Type Dell PowerEdge 2950, 2.5 GHz quadcore Xeon, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB storage
  • File Server 3: Type Apple G5, 6.6 TB X-Serve raid
  • Four storage arrays: Type Dell PowerVault MD1000 with overall 90 TB of storage capacity
  • Three tape backup units: 1x Type Dell PowerVault TL4000 with 2 drives for up to 20 1.6 TB tapes, and 2x Type Dell PowerVault128T with 2 tape drives for up to 20 600 GB tapes
  • All servers are secured by one APC 3000 providing 2 hours of power backup
